Prabhabati Bose (Dutt)

Prabhabati Bose (born Dutt) was the mother of Sarat Chandra Bose and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. She was born in 1869 in a respected Maulika Kayastha family. Her parents were Ganganarayan Dutt (of the Hatkhola Dutt family) and Kamala Kamini Dutt of Kashinath Dutt Road, Baranagore (a suburbs of Kolkata), India. She was the eldest daughter of her parents. According to the prevailing custom of that time, the Dutts practised family (gotra) exogamy, caste endogamy and intra caste hypergamy. In 1880, at the age of 11, she was married off to Janakinath who hailed from a kulin Bose family of village Kodalia (located near Sonarpur).
Prabhabati and Janakinath Bose had fourteen children together. She was very involved in their education and many members of extended Bose family made significant contributions to the Indian society. Not only Prabhabati was the matriarch of Bose family, but also after her parents' death she and Janakinath took care of her young sisters and brothers.

In 1928, Prabhabati was selected president of the Mahila Rashtriya Sangha.
